The Top 5 most frequently asked questions on Vedic Mathematics

Today I thought of writing this blog post about the Top 5 Most Frequently Asked Questions to Me on Vedic Mathematics. I have kept my answers crisp and short to suit anyone who wants to know about Vedic Maths. So here we go:

  1. Question: What is Vedic Mathematics?

Vedic Mathematics is a system of mathematics derived from ancient Indian texts known as the Vedas. It comprises a set of techniques and principles that simplify and expedite mathematical calculations. These methods are based on 16 sutras (aphorisms) and offer efficient ways to solve various mathematical problems. For young students, it means that you can make Maths fun and interesting by learning the various ways in which you can solve a problem. Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi loves it as well as it helps shed the fear of Maths for young students by offering quick and intelligent solutions.

The techniques and principles of Vedic Mathematics were later organized and popularized by mathematician Jagadguru Swami Shri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaja in the early 20th century. He authored a book called ‘Vedic Mathematics’ which is a monumental original work showcasing the brilliance of Indian Sages in solving various mathematical problems.

3. Question: What are the advantages of learning Vedic Mathematics?

Learning Vedic Mathematics offers several advantages, such as:

  • Speed and efficiency: Vedic Maths techniques enable faster calculations, allowing one to solve problems swiftly.
  • Mental math skills: Vedic Maths enhances mental calculation abilities, reducing dependence on calculators or written methods.
  • Flexibility and versatility: Vedic Maths offers multiple approaches to solving a problem, allowing individuals to choose the most convenient method.
  • Improved number sense: Vedic Maths provides a deeper understanding of numbers and their relationships, fostering a stronger mathematical foundation.
  • Fun and engaging: Vedic Maths techniques are often creative and interesting, making mathematics more enjoyable to learn and practice.

4. Question: Are Vedic Mathematics techniques applicable to all age groups?

Yes, Vedic Mathematics techniques are suitable for all age groups. They can be introduced to children as early as elementary school in Grade III to enhance their mathematical skills and mental agility. Adults can also benefit from learning Vedic Maths, especially in terms of faster calculations, improved problem-solving abilities, and increased confidence in handling numbers.

Also, Vedic Mathematics techniques are highly applicable in both competitive exams and day-to-day calculations. The speed and efficiency offered by Vedic Maths can be particularly beneficial in exams with time constraints, such as aptitude tests or entrance examinations. Moreover, the techniques can be used in various practical scenarios, including calculating bills, estimating quantities, managing finances, and solving mathematical puzzles.

That's an amazing story! For me, it just happened by chance 23 years ago in 1999–2000 when I was in college in Kolkata. I was preparing for Business School and was attempting to clear CAT. My mom got me a book called Vedic Mathematics by Tirthaji and that book changed my life. I started tutoring students in my friend circle on Vedic Maths and then one thing led to the other and I was promoting this subject all over the place. Soon that passion turned into a profession that allowed me to inspire others through the power of Vedic Maths!

These questions and answers provide a brief overview of Vedic Mathematics, its advantages, applications, and suitability for different age groups. Further exploration and practice can help individuals delve deeper into this ancient system of mathematical techniques.
